Art Deco jewelry, the 20’s style

The Art Deco movement is an artistic movement born in the 1920s. It has inspired many creators in the fields of design, architecture, decoration and of course, jewelry. The Art Deco jewels are therefore derived from this emblematic movement, unalterable symbols of the Roaring Twenties.

His birth in the heart of the Roaring Twenties

This artistic movement was born in 1925, at the same time as Gatsby the Magnificent, graphic design, the democratization of the car and the first films with sound.

It appeared in a particular historical context, at the end of the First World War. It is the liberation of a whole generation. Paris then experienced a decade of cultural and social effervescence: reconstruction, parties, the revolution in household appliances… Women became emancipated and, under the impetus of Coco Chanel, adopted a new look more in line with their new autonomy.

Opulence and design gradually took precedence over industry and Paris became a city of the avant-garde.

The Art Deco style takes its name from the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925.

The Art Deco style

The Art Deco movement is characterized by strong lines, layered shapes, bold materials and metallic colors (gold or silver). This design, recognizable among all, also plays on repetition, geometry and symmetry.

Within the urban Art Deco movement, we can also find similarities with ancient Egypt: obsession with monumental architecture, sacralization of material goods, and extravagant clothing style.

Art Deco jewelry

During this period, jewelers drew their inspiration from the Empire and Louis XVI styles to create sumptuous Art Deco jewelry, usually made of platinum or 18-carat gold.

They compete with imagination and create unusual jewels that are not without reminding the mechanics: “Pylons”, “ball bearings”, “engine” …

Curves, counter-curves and geometric effects are in order. The use of geometrical shapes provides clean, sharp planes and thus new stone sizes. Baguette and trapezoidal sizes are particularly popular.

The Art Deco jewelry is contrasted and mixes the shiny and the matte.

Art Deco rings

The Art Deco ring is probably one of the most popular antique rings today. We find the geometric design, white gold and diamond in contrast with more colorful stones such as sapphire, onyx or jade stone.

Handcrafted at the time, these are exceptional rings of incomparable elegance.

They are also the perfect choice for a retro engagement ring.
